For a small office, retail site, warehouse, or growing multi-site business, the right service depends on what must keep working when demand rises or a cable is cut. A 900 Mbps package may be excellent for one team and the wrong answer for another. The difference comes down to upload capacity, service commitments, network design, and a realistic view of how expensive downtime can become.

Before comparing providers, measure the work your connection actually supports. Count regular users, but do not stop there. Cloud backups, security cameras, software updates, guest Wi-Fi, VoIP calls, remote access, and large file transfers can use substantial bandwidth even when employees are not actively browsing.

Download speed gets the attention, yet upload speed often determines whether a business feels fast. A design firm sending media files, an accounting team syncing records, or an office with frequent video meetings needs consistent upstream capacity. Symmetrical fiber, where upload and download speeds are similar, is usually worth prioritizing for these use cases.

Also identify the applications that cannot tolerate interruption. A web-based point-of-sale system, hosted phone platform, or VPN to a central server has different requirements from ordinary web use. Ask the provider about latency, jitter, packet loss, and traffic management. These terms matter because a connection can pass a basic speed test while calls break up and remote desktops lag.

A practical baseline is to size for busy periods rather than average activity. If your office is quiet most of the day but runs backups at 6 p.m., confirm those backups will not disrupt late-working staff or interfere with overnight operations. If a connection supports customer-facing systems, build in headroom instead of buying the minimum.

Understand the Main Connection Types

Business broadband is not one product. The access technology changes performance, installation time, resilience options, and price.

Full-fiber broadband

Full-fiber, often described as FTTP or fiber-to-the-premises, brings fiber directly to the building. It is the strongest general-purpose option where available, offering high speeds, low latency, and frequently much better upload performance than older copper-based services. For many small and mid-size businesses, a business-grade full-fiber package is the best balance of performance and monthly cost.

Availability remains location-specific. Two neighboring buildings can have very different service choices, especially outside major urban areas. Check the exact address, not just the postcode, and ask whether the quoted service is already serviceable or requires new construction work.

FTTC and legacy copper services

Fiber-to-the-cabinet, or FTTC, uses fiber to a street cabinet and copper for the final stretch into the premises. It can still be adequate for a small office with modest cloud usage, but performance is affected by distance and line quality. Upload speed is usually the limiting factor.

Treat FTTC as a cost-conscious or interim option, not a long-term infrastructure plan if full-fiber is available. The UK is continuing its shift away from legacy copper networks, so businesses considering a multi-year contract should avoid investing in a setup likely to be replaced soon.

Leased lines and dedicated internet access

A leased line is a dedicated, symmetrical connection with committed bandwidth and stronger service guarantees. It costs more than standard broadband, but it is built for organizations where a disruption causes immediate financial or operational damage. Think busy call centers, multi-user cloud environments, professional media teams, healthcare sites, or offices that run critical applications from the cloud.

The key benefit is not simply faster speed. Dedicated internet access typically provides predictable capacity, a business-grade SLA, and faster fault response. Installation can take longer and may involve excess construction charges, so obtain a site survey before treating any quote as final.

5G fixed wireless and mobile backup

5G can be a viable primary connection for temporary locations, construction sites, pop-up retail, and premises that cannot yet get fiber. It can also deliver impressive speeds in well-covered areas. However, performance may vary by local signal conditions, network congestion, building materials, and the data policy attached to the plan.

For most established offices, 5G makes more sense as a backup connection. Pair it with an appropriate router or firewall that can automatically fail over when the primary line fails. Test that failover regularly. A backup that has never been tested is only a theory.

Do Not Confuse a Business Package With a Business SLA

Business broadband plans may include a static IP address, priority support, a supplied router, and faster repair targets. Those features are useful, but read the service-level agreement closely. A provider may promise a target response time rather than a guaranteed restoration time, and exclusions can apply to local power failures, damaged internal cabling, or third-party network issues.

Ask four direct questions before signing:

  • What is the target time to diagnose and restore a complete outage?
  • Is support available around the clock, including weekends?
  • Does the service include a static public IP address, and is it IPv6-ready?
  • What compensation applies if the provider misses its stated service level?

A static IP is particularly relevant for remote access, site-to-site VPNs, self-hosted services, and security systems that need approved inbound connections. Some lower-cost services use carrier-grade NAT, which can complicate those setups. Confirm this before deploying equipment.

Build Resilience Instead of Hoping for Uptime

The most common connectivity mistake is buying one excellent connection and calling the job done. A single line can fail because of roadworks, a damaged pole, a local exchange issue, a faulty router, or a power problem inside the building.

A sensible resilience design uses two connections with different failure points. That may mean full-fiber as the primary service and 5G as the secondary service. For higher-risk sites, use two wired circuits delivered through separate infrastructure where possible. Two packages from the same provider may still share the same physical route, so ask about true route diversity rather than assuming two bills equal redundancy.

Your edge hardware matters just as much. The router provided by an ISP is often sufficient for basic access, but it may not meet the security, monitoring, or traffic-control needs of a growing company.

Resilience also includes power. Put the fiber termination equipment, router, switch, Wi-Fi access points, and essential phones on an uninterruptible power supply. Internet service is not helpful if a brief power dip takes down the networking gear.

Compare the Full Cost, Not the Headline Price

Monthly cost is only one line in the decision. Check installation charges, router rental, static IP fees, early termination terms, price increases, and any excess construction costs. Quotes are commonly presented before VAT, so budget from the final business expense rather than the promotional figure.

A cheaper service can become expensive if it creates hours of lost staff time each month. On the other hand, a leased line may be unnecessary for a five-person office that mainly uses email and browser-based tools. Match the spend to the operational consequence of failure.

Contract length deserves attention too. Longer terms can reduce the monthly rate, but they make relocation, expansion, or a change in local fiber availability harder to manage. If your lease is short or your premises are uncertain, ask about flexible terms and transfer options.

Plan the Installation Like an IT Project
