The 10 Gigabit Ethernet System is ruling the telecommunication market and is expected to go further. But, this doesn’t mean 1 Gigabit Ethernet System has no space in the market. In today’s network device, there are still many 1GbE infrastructures existing.
If you are one of the users of 1GbE infrastructure, you should be a user of an SFP optical transceiver. It’s a critical component that supports 1G data transmission. Also, it’s increasingly required in most Gigabit Ethernet networks.
The SFP transceiver modules network device plug into dedicated sockets, connecting the electrical circuitry of the device with the external optical or copper network. They extend routing and switching functionality throughout the network, facilitating specialized high-speed communication over long distances such as different buildings on a campus or multiple floors in the same building. Casually, these modules are known as a mini Gigabit Interface Converter or GBIC.
In the market, you will find many brands providing various types of SFP transceiver modules network device. But, what we recommend is Cisco. It’s one of the most well-known and reliable companies in the telecommunication industry. You can prefer other brands as well but the output will not be like Cisco SFP modules.
In this post, we will discuss more Cisco SFP modules. You will find out how Cisco SFP works, how they are used, and other details.
The four versions are:
The 1000Base-SX works on multimode fiber for the link length of 550 m, while the 1000Base-LX and 1000Base-ZX work only on single-mode fiber for the maximum link length of 10 km and 80 respectively. Talking about the 1000Base-T version, it’s the RJ-45 version.
Users always have lots of confusion while using Cisco SFP modules. One common confusion is if the combination of Cisco SFP modules can be used. The answer is you can use any combination of SFP transceiver modules that Cisco devices support. The only thing is that each port must match the physical medium specifications on the other end of the cable. For example, it should be copper to copper, fiber to fiber, and mode to mode.
Other than this, the cable shouldn’t exceed the stipulated cable length for reliable communications.
Compared to other brands, Cisco devices are significantly compatible. It’s said that you can use them with other brands or if you like and the result will be great.
Keeping this in mind, you can use Cisco SFP modules with the switches of other brands. But, everything depends on the switch you are putting in it. You should be sure about the modes because SFP modules are either single-mode or multi-mode.
Important advice- You should try using Cisco SFP modules with Cisco switches and routers, wherever or whenever possible. Though Cisco SFP modules are interchangeable, you shouldn’t change the brands if not required. The output will be affected.
You should follow the following steps to install Cisco SFP transceiver modules:
There should be no dust and other contaminants in the optical bores of the SFP modules. When SFP modules get obstructed with dust, they don’t work correctly. To protect the modules, you should insert clean dust plugs into them after the fiber cables are removed. Other than this, you should clean the optic surfaces of the cables before plugging them back into the optical bores.
You should follow ESD prevention procedures when inserting or removing SFP modules. Prefer an anti-static device for better results. If an anti-static device isn’t available, you should ground yourself by touching the metal part of the appliance chassis.
There are a few more precautions to follow. When working on appliance equipment, you should always wear a grounded wrist strap. Other than this, you should treat all assemblies, components, and interface connections as static-sensitive. Most importantly, you should avoid working in carpeted areas and keep body movement to a minimum while removing or installing SFP modules. This will minimize the buildup of static charge.
Following these precautions, you will safely install, remove, or use the Cisco SFP transceiver modules.
