Which network switch should I buy for my mid-size business?

A network switch is a device that helps connect devices within a network (typically LAN) and transmits data packets to and from the Ethernet internet to those devices. It is designed to send data to the single device it is intended for instead of networks of multiple devices. That single device could be another switch, router, or computer.

While a router is essential for an Internet connection, a network switch is exclusively meant for interconnecting devices. Homes and small offices usually need routers for ethernet Internet access. However, large offices, data centers, and businesses with dozens or hundreds of computers require network switches.

What are Layer 2 and Layer 3 Switches?

Network switches operate at either of the following two layers:

  1. OSI Layer 2 (The Data Link Layer)
  2. Layer 3 (The Network Layer)

Layer 2 switches forward data based on the MAC address, while Layer 3 switches use the destination IP address to route data. Some switches support both functions.

MAC address refers to the unique identifier assigned to a network interface controller (NIC) and acts as a network address during communication within a network.

Generally, most switches operate at Layer 2 and connect devices within a network using Ethernet cables. If you need to create virtual LANs, choose a switch that also operates at Layer 3.

Ethernet cables are physical cables that transfer broadband signals between devices, such as a modem, router, and computer, via Ethernet ports.

Unmanaged vs. Managed Switches

  • Unmanaged Switches create additional Ethernet ports within a local network, allowing more devices to access the internet. They send data back and forth using the MAC addresses of devices.
  • Managed Switches function similarly but are designed for larger networks. They allow network administrators to control traffic priorities and create Virtual LANs (VLANs) to subdivide a large network into smaller, manageable sections.

How Does a Network Switch Work?

When a device connects to a switch, the switch records the MAC address and uses it to identify the device from which outgoing packets originate and where to send incoming packets. Unlike IP addresses, which can be assigned dynamically, the MAC address remains fixed in the device’s NIC, providing a consistent identifier.

When a device sends a data packet, it enters the switch. The switch reads the packet’s header to determine the destination. It then sends the packet via the appropriate port to the destination device.

To reduce collisions between network traffic from the switch and connected devices, most switches feature full-duplex functionality, which gives packets access to the switch’s full bandwidth.
